Enjoying Retirement is a re-release based on psychologist Michael Longhurst’s research in 2000 involving 200 people approaching retirement, a topic just as relevant today.
Longhurst suggests strategies for the obvious challenges of coping with stress, anxiety and depression; finding meaning and satisfaction in life; and dealing with enforced retirement. But he also gives strategies for less obvious areas like assertiveness, communication and conflict management skills, and handling conflicts within relationships.
Grief and loss can also be an unexpected retirement challenge—not only the possible loss of a spouse, but leaving the family home or experiencing a loss of purpose in life. There are exercises and strategies to ease these challenges and ways to find enjoyment so that retirement can be a vital and liberating time.
