John Williams: A Life In Music

London Symphony Orchestra

Rating: 4 / 5

John Williams is one of the most successful film composers of the past few decades. To celebrate his output, London Symphony Orchestra has released A Life In Music, a collection of some of Williams’ best-known movie themes.

The album kicks off with Star Wars, one theme that deserves the over-used term iconic. It’s one of those tunes that nearly everyone recognises as soon as it starts. Almost as famous is ‘Hedwig’s Theme’ from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, which displays Williams’ mastery of light and shade in his music.

‘Raiders March’ from Raiders of the Lost Ark is another blockbuster theme included, but there are also quieter and more reflective compositions, such as the classical style themes from Schindler’s List and E.T., music of great beauty that showcases the subtlety of Williams’ work.
