A Toast to Melba
Rating: 4 / 5
Dame Nellie Melba was our first international superstar, and Australian operatic soprano Lorina Gore has produced a fine tribute album singing the songs that made Melba famous.
Melba was never afraid to work with the modern composers of the time, like Charles Gounod and Jules Massenet. Gore is also known for singing both traditional and contemporary work, for which she has won many awards, and she does an excellent job of interpreting Melba’s famous songs. A Toast to Melba focuses on Melba’s French repertoire, along with one of Melba’s party pieces, ‘Caro Nome’, from Verdi’s Rigoletto.
Gore makes it sound easy with her glorious ringing tone and subtle touches that make you hang on to hear the end of every note. Add ballet music from Gounod’s Faust played superbly by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Marko Letonja, and the result is delightful listening.
