The Pastor and the Painter
Rating: 3.5 / 5
Mercy, forgiveness, redemption and transformation are themes explored as Cindy Wockner takes us behind the bars of the Indonesian prisons where Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran spent 10 years on death row. They were two of the young Australian ‘Bali Nine’ who had been caught trying to smuggle drugs to Australia out of Indonesia.
Titled The Pastor And The Painter, it outlines the incredible transformations of Andrew into a Christian pastor who became a great support to other prisoners, and Myuran, who became a skilled painter, creating many programs to help provide rehabilitation of other prisoners. The book outlines the 10-year process of unsuccessfully seeking mercy through a shambolic legal system and an indifferent and hard-hearted President.
This intimate account invokes many emotions as the cruelty of capital punishment is juxtaposed against the love and grace of these two men who had been transformed through their Christian faith.
