100 Nasty Women of History
Rating: 4 / 5
100 Nasty Women was, in part, inspired by Donald Trump calling Hillary Clinton ‘such a nasty woman’ during the 2016 presidential campaign. Jewell’s thesis is that history is full of women who might have been labelled as ‘nasty’ when they were, in fact, powerful, brilliant, belligerent or eccentric—qualities often celebrated in the men of history but not viewed as ‘feminine’.
She has selected stories of impressive and inspiring women—queens, geniuses, innovators and activists. Jewell has done extraordinary research and the breadth of her scope is remarkable. Her writing style is flippant and slangy, including some swearing. This did grate on me after a while but not enough to stop me reading these short, sharp and shiny stories that thoroughly deserve to be heard. A very good read.
