I’ll Walk Beside You
Teddy Tahu Rhodes
Rating: 3.5 / 5

Although a Kiwi by birth, opera singer Teddy Tahu Rhodes can rightly put in a claim for the title of Australia’s favourite bass-baritone. Initially an accountant, when his beautiful deep voice was discovered he was lured to the world of opera, music theatre and the concert stage.

This album sees Rhodes singing with excellent instrumentalists, The Southern Cross Soloists. I’ll Walk Beside You is a mix of folk, classical and popular songs, so there is something for everyone. The title track is a great affirmation of the power of love, and Rhodes does a fine job of the faith-based songs ‘Deep River’ and ‘Shall We Gather at the River’.

In acknowledgement of his heritage, he has included the Maori song Po Atarau and pays homage to Australia’s W.G. James by including his nostalgic offering ‘Comrades of Mine’. It’s a pleasing compilation that should give much pleasure. Julie Houghton
