The Trip of a Lifetime
Rating: 4 / 5
The Trip of a Lifetime continues McInerney’s family saga, set in South Australia’s Clare Valley, focusing on the Quinlan sisters, Anna, Bett and Carrie, once dubbed ‘the alphabet sisters’ by their eccentric and charismatic Irish grandmother, Lola. Following Anna’s death from cancer, only Bett and Carrie are left and both are devoted to Lola.
It becomes apparent that this is not a traditional family reunion trip when Lola decides to visit her Irish birthplace with Bett and teenage granddaughter Ellen. Gradually much is revealed about the secret family history and the result is more harmonious family relationships between our protagonists. Meanwhile the feisty Lola deals with her past demons and the trip becomes an important catharsis.
Family difficulties are resolved by the end of the book, but it’s quite a roller coaster ride with the grandmother we would all love to have in our lives. Highly recommended.
