The Power Game
Meg and Tom Keneally
Rating: 4 / 5
The Power Game is the third in Meg and Tom Keneally’s series set in Australia in the convict era.
Ticket-of-leave man Hugh Llewellyn Monsarrat and his Irish ex-convict housekeeper Hannah Mulrooney are skilled at solving crimes and in this book travel to an island off Van Diemen’s Land to solve a brutal murder.
The setting is skilfully evoked and the characters vivid and individual, with Hannah consistently showing the most intelligence.
The Keneallys avoid any temptation to try to re-create the speech of the times, often so annoying in historical novels, and have used real people and events as inspiration for their story.
As well as being a gripping page-turner, The Power Game offers insights into the minds and feelings of convicts, administrators and their families as they struggle with the new colony. The plot is convincing, and one hopes that the series will continue.
