Barney Greatrex: From Bomber Command to the French Resistance
Rating: 4 / 5
Michael Veitch is known to most as an actor—beginning his television career in The D-Generation in 1985. But he is also a wonderful writer and storyteller. His latest book traces the incredible story of this Australian World War II airman who was shot down over occupied France and rescued by the French Resistance.
It is more an adventure story than a war tale, one of overcoming the odds, as Barney evaded the German occupiers for many months, trusting in the local French, and relying on their generosity for survival.
I can’t imagine the terror of hiding in a forest or a barn, just metres from men who would kill you on sight. Barney never wanted to speak of his ordeal until well into his 90s. Veitch takes his story, and skilfully weaves a suspenseful and touching account that would appeal to a wider audience than just war history readers.
