Four Respectable Ladies Seek Part-Time Husband
Rating: 3.5 / 5
Barbara Toner’s new novel is set in a post-World War I Australian country town, where four ladies find that nobody will take their different problems seriously and help them find solutions, so they need a man’s assistance.
Adelaide suspects a manager of the family business is committing fraud but, while she has a husband, he has returned from the war with emotional problems, so she needs male help just as much as the other three ladies. Louisa is a widow who is being blackmailed, orphan Maggie is bringing up two wild young brothers and Pearl is searching for a missing fiancé. They shock the town by advertising for a husband to share, but not necessarily with conjugal expectations.
The book is laced with wry humour and a quirky style that gradually draws in the reader and it’s a rollicking ride to some satisfactory endings for our brave female quartet.
