This anthology is engaging, with bestselling thriller writers combining with their peers to place well-known characters into shared adventures. In MatchUp, the writers are paired by opposite genders, as edited by Lee Child, the creator of the popular Jack Reacher character.
The stories are the readable fare of road trips, airline lounges and lazy Sunday afternoons.
Three favourite yarns were Sandra Brown and C.J. Box (featuring the characters Lee Coburn and Joe Pickett), Val McDermid and Peter James (Tony Hill and Roy Grace punning it up in Footloose) and Kathy Reichs and Lee Child (where their creations Temperance Brennan and Jack Reacher uncover corporate and governmental malfeasance in Faking a Murderer).
These are predictable stories with the occasional twist. Fans may well find the authors’ notes re the process of co-writing much more scintillating.
