HMAS Australia II has a fascinating story, moving through the harsh, tough depression years into the 1930s and the build-up to WWII. Mike Carlton has made this unique chapter of naval history very readable and enjoyable. It has its lively moments, with Carlton adding his unique flair and literary style to the historic accounts.
HMAS Australia patrolled the North Atlantic and was bombed by the Luftwaffe in Liverpool, before returning to the Pacific, to fight the Japanese in the Coral Sea and the Philippines, surviving hits by Japanese kamikaze planes which killed her captain and crew.
Mike Carlton brings to life, in quite a vivid way, some of the great sea battles of the Pacific War, covering the hopes and fears of those members of the crew who sailed on HMAS Australia II.
This book is entertaining and informative, shedding fresh light on Australia’s naval history.
