The Baby Doctor
Rating: 5 / 5
Aspiring writers are often told to write about what they know, and Australian author Fiona McArthur does just that. Her day job is as a clinical midwifery educator in a rural clinic, and her latest book, the second about a family of three sisters, is set in a small town in outback Australia.
Our central character, Dr Sienna Wilson, is a big shot obstetrician from the city who has been persuaded by a family connection to spend time in a small town investigating a recent series of birth abnormalities. To hook us in, McArthur throws in a slow-burning romance for Sienna, and a serious treatment of domestic violence concerning a local young woman, that is quite chilling.
We care deeply about the characters and there are satisfying resolutions after a series of twists and turns. I couldn’t put this latest McArthur book down—definitely one for the Christmas stocking list.
