The Shack

Rating: 4 / 5

They say truth is stranger than fiction, and watching The Shack may make you ponder that statement.

Based on a best-selling book, The Shack traces a father’s distraught journey following a family tragedy, which leads to a crisis of faith.

Mack (Sam Worthington) receives a mysterious letter inviting him to visit a shack in the middle of a forest in his search for answers to all the questions he has for a God he is not sure exists any more.

This leads him to a mysterious trio of strangers ready to care for him—Jesus (Avraham Ali Alush), the Holy Spirit (Sumire Matsubara) and Papa (Octavia Spencer). Gradually, they help Mack unpack his angst and allow him to restore his troubled soul and find his way forward.

The power of this film is its unconventional approach to matters of faith and experience, underpinned by true compassion and selflessness from the trio who inhabit The Shack.

Mack discovers important truths that allow him to understand his tragedy and reclaim his life. It’s an inspiring story made vivid by fine performances from all the lead actors. It’s easy to identify with Mack and find parallels within our own lives.

This DVD release should attract a new audience for this fascinating story.
