Vera Lynn 100
Dame Vera Lynn
Rating: 3.5 / 5
Technology is used to great effect in this commemorative recording of Dame Vera Lynn to celebrate her 100th birthday. Decca has teamed her famous recordings with new orchestral arrangements played by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, with popular singers joining her for duets. Alfie Boe sings ‘We’ll Meet Again’, Aled Jones performs ‘As Time Goes By’ and Alexander Armstrong joins the Dame in ‘White Cliffs of Dover’, giving us pleasant, novel arrangements of these famous songs.
But Cynthia Erivo’s duet in ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’ would have been better left to Dame Vera on her own. ‘A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square’ is a highlight, with orchestral accompaniment and solo cello and violin from the Ayoub Sisters which gives the song a warm jazz feel. Through it all, Dame Vera’s warm and soothing voice shines through as it did for so many soldiers during World War Two.
