Benaud Trio
Rating: 4.5 / 5

If you thought you needed modern technology to create the instruments of the orchestra, you need to hear the Benaud Trio’s new album.

Best known as an award-winning Australian classical ensemble of pianist Amir Farid, violinist Lachlan Bramble and his cellist brother Ewen, the Benauds are having fun with new arrangements of classic pop favourites arranged for them by Melbourne composer Nicholas Buc. They cover artists such as Abba, the Jackson 5 and Led Zeppelin, among others. There’s even a James Bond medley of film themes, including ‘Nobody Does It Better,’ with a beautifully haunting violin melody from Lachlan.

The album ranges from lush and soothing in Joel’s ‘Goodnight My Angel,’ to a jazz band sound in ‘Scandinavian Invasion’. With only three instruments, some cello-thumping percussion and hand clapping, the Benauds re-create popular tunes, and Mixtape is a great way to introduce someone to classical acoustic music.
