Dr Stuart Shanker with Teresa Barker
Rating: 3.5 / 5
Who doesn’t want to be less stressed, more self-aware and better engaged with life? Moreover, who doesn’t want to help their child achieve this?
Dr Stuart Shanker, one of Canada’s leading child psychologists, shares decades of experience in self-regulation in this practical guide for parents. Shanker’s book delves into the five basic categories of stress from psychological, philosophical and compassionate angles to help parents break the stress cycle for their children and themselves. He provides parents with the information to understand what is draining a child’s energy reserves and provides the tools to then tailor interactions and environments to reduce stress.
Anecdotally rich, the book can be a little repetitive if you want a no-fluff guidebook. But if you can move through the tediousness there are a lot of really helpful techniques and considerations that could not only change your child’s life, but yours too. A valuable book, even if you don’t have kids.
