The Safest Place in London
Rating: 4 / 5
Australian author Maggie Joel’s latest book takes us back to the grim days of the blitz in World War II London, focusing on two young mothers from different classes who end up in the same shelter during a blitz.
Nancy and daughter Emily are from true Struggletown in inner London, while Diana and toddler Abigail enjoy a more refined lifestyle in the country, but are in London for the day. Both women have spouses in the forces, though one is an officer and one is a very dodgy character.
Joel follows how the two women’s lives intertwine after their shelter is hit and not everyone in it survives. She also follows the lives of the two men, and while she can get bogged down with intricate details of battles and new characters, there are enough gripping twists and turns along the way to sweep the reader along in their wake.
