Mark Thompson and Martin Blake
Rating: 4 / 5
Mark ‘Bomber’ Thomson isn’t one for gilding the lily. Both as an AFL player and coach of two AFL teams, first Geelong and then his beloved Essendon, Thompson was known as a straight shooter.
But that doesn’t mean he isn’t also enigmatic and a bit of a dark horse, and so his memoir—co-written with veteran football writer Martin Blake—allows us to see inside the man and beyond the headlines (Thompson coached Essendon for the 2014 season amid the supplement saga while then coach James Hird served his suspension).
In Bomber, Thompson sets the record straight. Not only does he come across as a born leader, he also admits that he was never cut out for footy politics. And this is perhaps most evident in the cover shot by Tim Bauer—where our hero looks browbeaten and exhausted by a game he once loved, but which ended up almost eating him alive.
