Eat, play and stay with Mahlia Simpson

September 23, 2016

For a young woman who hasn’t yet celebrated her 30th birthday, Mahlia Simpson has packed a lot into life.

For 12 seasons she has co-produced the lifestyle program, Eat, Play and Stay, a weekly program on Foxtel’s Aurora television channel, which showcases tempting holiday destinations around Australia and across the globe.

Mahlia is its host, presenter and co-producer, and simply loves what she does, which is only one of many passions she has dipped into on her journey to Eat, Play and Stay.

‘I loved singing and acting growing up, but as I got older journalism became my passion and in my early 20s I discovered a love for travel. So I completed a Bachelor of Journalism degree and moved into presenting and producing lifestyle content, which I love,’ she tells Warcry.

As an actor, Mahlia enjoyed a guest role on the iconic Neighbours, playing Delta Goodrem’s love rival. As a singer, Mahlia has appeared on several television shows, and has performed in many Melbourne theatres.

Mahlia’s parents, Jacqui Johnson and Graham Simpson, have spent a lifetime in the media, in roles ranging from journalists to radio announcers to publicists and authors.

Mahlia’s own path after school was 18 months of work experience in television journalism, working in news and current affairs, breakfast and evening television with producing, presenting and scriptwriting duties, initially with Channel 31 and later with the Seven Network.

Media can be a fickle beast for ongoing employment, and Mahlia’s parents’ adaptability in the media taught her a lot.

‘Seeing how Mum and Dad could transition from print media to television to radio and never be out of work made me realise that journalism has many strings to its bow,’ Mahlia said.

When it comes to promoting Australia as the ideal tourism venue, Mahlia is an enthusiastic advocate.

‘We spend a lot of time travelling domestically showing people all the main attractions and also the hidden gems within Australia. When you live in a country, sometimes people don’t take the time to explore what’s in their own backyard. We take great pride in exposing people to the best that Australia has to offer,’ she says.

Mahlia has enjoyed introducing television audiences to beautiful places including the Whitsundays, and gourmet regions in South Australia and New South Wales. The program also spends a lot of time exploring gorgeous areas of the South Pacific, Asia, America and Canada.

Mahlia has a great sales pitch for our wide brown land. ‘With something for every type of traveller, we help you find the ultimate holiday destination. We go out there and do the research, so all you need to do is sit back, relax and start booking your next escape,’ she says proudly.

For Mahlia, work really is a pleasure, but in her time off she loves spending time with friends and family, beach walks, movies, new restaurants…and catching up on sleep.

We all need holidays to refresh us for our everyday lives, and a verse from Proverbs would seem to sum up Mahlia Simpson.

‘A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed’ (Proverbs chapter 11, verse 25).

It seems that the Bible encourages us to balance our lives, and remember the value of holidays.
